According to an article on Reuters today, AT&T’s top executive Randall Stephenson reported approximately half a million iPad owners are currently using the AT&T service to connect to the Internet.
AT&T is the second largest mobile service provider in the US and the sole operator with cellular connectivity for the iPad. Apple reported sales of 3.27 million iPads for Q2 and based on AT&T’s numbers, it looks like many users are choosing not to access cyberspace via the AT&T network. Pacific Crest analyst Steve Clement believes, “Half a million at this point would seem low.”
The popularity of Apple’s tablet device has led many operators and manufacturers to bank on “strong growth from gadgets such as tablet computers.” Unfortunately, AT&T’s current numbers could indicate such growth will be less than expected for the operators.
