Reviews - Dropbox for iPad Updated, Includes New App Directory

The Dropbox app has been updated. For iPhone users, there is a UI redesign that takes full advantage of the Retina Display. The iPad version has added full screen landscape document viewing and the support for multitasking to allow files to upload or download in the background.

The new version was designed with the new iOS in mind. It brings automatic offline caching for recently accessed files, several user interface enhancements including a new home screen and progress display, support for HD video and high-resolution photo capture.

In addition to the iPad and iPhone app updates, Dropbox has released a service called App Directory. This online database will keep a list of Dropbox compatible iPad and iPhone apps. You can visit the App Directory anytime you want to browse and review any Dropbox compatible apps. The App Directory is a central place for you to find out new apps that will work in conjunction with Dropbox capabilities. The Dropbox update is available for FREE via Apple’s App Store.

The iCon, an iPad-compatible Bed Available for $20,000

The iCon, an iPad-compatible Bed Available for $20,000

By dag | September 23, 2010 | no comments
If you are looking for a new bed, and if you happen to have 20 grand laying around, the iCon from Hollandia International should be on your list. Accessories for Apple devices usually sell pretty well no matter what the price tag says, and Hollandia is trying its luck with its new bed specifically designed for the iPad – note that the company just won the prize for most expensive iPad “accessory” to date.
Like most Hollandia luxury beds, the iCon features an adjustable mattress, but the main difference from its siblings comes from the fact that the iCon also features a custom headboard that offers two iPad docks, and a sound system including four speakers and a 250-watt amplifier. Given the price, and if you’re willing to splurge, Hollandia will allow you choose between 200 different colors and fabrics, as the bed is custom-made to order.
The iCon doesn’t come cheap, and we simply cannot recommend the bed for the average iPad user, but again, if you happen to be an incredibly wealthy iPad fan, this bed may be just what you’ve been looking for!

App Store Infographic

App Store Infographic

By Bill | September 24, 2010 | no comments

Executive business website, MeetTheBoss.tv, has delved into the Apple App Store eco-system to take a look at the metrics behind the “stratospheric” rise of the apps market.  The company’s new infographic shows off key App Store metrics like top apps categories (#1 books), app submission over time (669 per day) and app store price distribution (most common price is 99¢).

Apple’s Applications eco-system is the largest mobile apps ecosystem and started shortly after the introduction of the iPhone back in May of 2008. The App Store has grown to over 260,000 iOS apps in a little more than two years and there have been nearly 30,000 iPad apps submitted in only six months.

With the popularity of apps and media companies wanting to get their content out to mobile consumers, it comes as no surprise that MeetTheBoss has also decided to join the party.  The company just released an iOS app for the iPhone which gives users access to exclusive interviews and news from the company’s site.

Orb’s Music Player Fits Nicely With Your iPad

Orb’s Music Player Fits Nicely With Your iPad

By Roberto | September 24, 2010 | no comments

Orb is very well known for their media streaming software, but not as a player in the hardware segment. Many folks use Orb’s software  to placeshift their personal music, photos, videos, live television, and Internet music and video streams from their home PC to their TV, stereo, iPad, mobile phones, PDAs or laptops.

It is quite surprising to see Orb getting into the hardware business so quickly. They have released their Media Player (MP-1) with a very enticing price ($69) for all consumers, and the MP-1 can be used with your iOS devices. It seems that Orb is going after some very well established and strong competition.

Streaming music from your computer to a variety of home audio devices has been a stronghold for companies like Savant, Sonos, Logitech, and even Apple. But, with a very attractive entry price ($69), Orb may be looking to shake up the consumer market a bit, at least a portion of that market.

The MP-1 works by connecting the media player to a powered audio device via an in-line jack. Once connected, it will play music stored locally, on your network, or from attractive services like Pandora, Sirius and Internet radio stations when streamed over a WiFi connection. In order to use Orb’s MP-1 device, you’ll need to use the Orb Caster media server software, which will run on your PC or Mac. Orb Caster will index all the media files on your PC or network drives and will stream the media to your Orb’s MP-1 device.

To sweeten the deal for all of you out there, Orb is offering the Orb Controller app for iOS devices for FREE. The app normally costs $9.99, but if you buy the MP-1 you will get the app free of charge. Keep in mind that the Orb controller app lets you control your music from anywhere in your home by allowing you to select your music, playlist or Internet radio station, and the Orb device you want it to play on.

The Orb MP-1 is available now for the price of $69. It can be ordered from Orb’s website.

More Rumors About the 7-Inch iPad, Ready for Production

Rumors of a smaller, 7-inch iPad have been pouring in for more than three months (see here, here, here, and here), but so far, none of them came from folks involved with the production of the alleged device.
Shanzai, a Chinese tech news outlet, reported earlier today that the design phase of the device is now finished, and production of the 7-inch tablet could start very soon, according to rumors coming directly from Foxconn’s staff – Foxconn is the actual manufacturer of all iOS-based devices, and like Shanzai, Foxconn’s production plant is based is Shenzhen.
According to Tai-Pan, the author of the post, the new device will look more like a large iPhone 4 than an iPad, “Yes there will be a 7” tablet, yes it’s well underway in terms of product development and in fact it’s a finished product. Yes 5 plus different designs have been floating around to help Apple protect itself from people discovering its next product look and feel but… the final design will in fact bear more resemblance to the iPhone 4 stylings than the original iPad design.”
As usual, this kind of news should be taken with a grain of salt, but given the fact that more than five different independent sources involved with Apple’s supply chain seem to agree on the existence of a 7-inch iPad, the rumor may well be based on actual facts. If the tablet enters production later this year as reported by Shanzai, the new device would then be most likely launched sometime early next year.
